 January

There's no such thing as the January blues in Greengables! The children were all very excited to be back. We even managed to arrange a teeny tiny bit of snow to play in!

Bella and Bertie have resumed their adventures once again! The children have loved having the opportunity to take them home for the weekend and they have been to birthday parties, train journeys, windy walks at the seaside and cosying up at home with the children! Bella and Bertie have been with Greengables for many (many!) years, Thanks for taking such good care of them!

Splatter Painting! We had such good fun with this activity! There was lots of laughter and of course the shock and surprise element when the children actually got splatted with a bit of paint instead of the paper!!!! Although we don't like to put too much focus on the end product (it's all about the process!) the finished result was pretty epic! We cant wait to get it up on display as a background for our future snow people!

Independent Little People! During this term we will see the children's independence increase in many areas. They love the sense of responsibility and there is nothing like seeing how pleased they are when they succeed at something they have been working on! Keep giving them lots of time and encouragement at home, you may hear lots of "I can't!", but we like to give them the positive spin on that phrase and say "I can try!"!

We used the big play equipment in the assembly hall during the very stormy days this month! The children continued to develop their confidence and balancing skills on the Sco-gym, tricky short steps were added for extra height to encourage some healthy risk taking and a little bit of challenge! We got a mega workout on the trampoline and had great fun on the climbing frame & slide!

We're Going On A Bear Hunt!.. This really did not live up to the children's expectations when they discovered it was only Bertie hiding behind the curtain, we are going to have to get creative for next time!!!

Chop chop! We worked on developing our cutting skills by using knives and scissors to prepare the vegetables for our soup! We had to be very careful! Using scissors helps us build and strengthen the muscles in our hands!

The plan: to make some melty snowmen biscuits and try our best to get the icing consistency right.... We like a challenge! What the children see: sweet treats, sitting with friends, making funny faces on their biscuits, a snack to take home and a sneaky lick of the spoon..... What is actually happening: Listening, turn taking, joining in with friends, fine motor skills, language development, observing, predicting, decision making, counting and tasting!

Making their mark! Mark making occurs in all areas with all sorts of media; chalks, paints, pens, pencils.. even in some coconut & dough!

Their play! Their way! During play, the children explore the art of problem solving, decision making, work on their fine motor skills, increase their vocabulary, build friendships, make new discoveries, show determination AND work as a team! Who said being a Pre-Schooler was an easy job?!

Our Arctic animals have had some adventures this month, first they got trapped in the ice, then they went ice-skating .. and then they finished off with a nice warm bubble bath!

Our first ever 'Greengables' Tug of War'! It's the taking part that counts... Tell that to the competitive grown ups! We did finish with a friendly snowball fight though!
